I'm not sure where to put this, so I'm sticking it here. I just got Pirates of the Burning Sea, and I'm on the Bonny Server. Just wanted to make sure this was known in case someone else picks up the game.

Has anyone else heard anything about it? I played a bit in a stress test and some in the beta, but I wasn't able to play up past 8. So far I love it though.

Ja!

Has it been released? I haven't heard anything either. I've read some stuff like it's part EQ, part EVE, part DaOC. The water travel is wide open (in a UO kind of way from what I've read although they compared it to EVE space travel which I'm not familiar with). The towns are supposedly very colorful and vibrant with bustling activity but every building is an instanced zone. How long load times would be for every building may or may not be a good thing. I can see both sides of that coin.

I've also heard the economy is very complex, probably one of the more complex in any game. Taxes, payouts, bribes are all part of the norm. Making money is usually done by, what else, shipping. You buy/harvest your product and take it to whatever port you think you'll make the most money. Too much to ship? Build a warehouse at the site and stockpile it. Pirates a problem? (and you know they will) Hire mercenaries (players or non-players) to escort you to port. All of which cost money (Prices of harvest equipment, taxes for warehouse property, payment for mercs).

I'm definitely interested in playing if there are others up for it.

Yea, give us a review of it when you get the chance to thoroughly play it, Sam. I've heard some really bad opinions and some really good ones, but would like to hear from someone I know.

Just came from the PotBS website...

Remember when I said it was like EQ/EVE/DaOC?? Check this out....

Nation vs. Nation battles

The war for dominance of the Burning Sea is fought on every front. British Navy warships intercept and destroy Spanish frigates. French Privateers flout the might of England and loot its merchants of their cargo. Spanish Merchants smuggle gunpowder into French ports to supply the rebels there. And wherever chaos reigns, the first to feast are the Brethren of the Coast, sailing into battle beneath the black flag.

Most ports in the game can be conquered by enemy nations. Players generate Unrest points for an enemy port through economic warfare, defeating nearby NPCs of that nation, and completing missions. Defenders of that town can reduce Unrest for their town the same way.

If enough Unrest is earned, the Open Sea around that port goes into a lawless state that allows Pirate PvP. Pirate players can attack any player near that port and vice versa. If Unrest continues to accumulate, a Nation vs. Nation PvP area will appear and any player can attack any other player of a different nation.

Players cause these PvP hotspots to appear and when they do, red circles on the map show you clearly where the danger areas are. Sail into them if you dare – avoid them if you must.

Two days later, a Final Battle for that port is held. 25 players are chosen by lottery from the attacking nation and another 25 from the defending nation, although those players who have generated Unrest points have a better chance of being chosen. This massive 25 vs. 25 battle is itself influenced by player activity during those two days. Each side racks up Conquest points that get them advantages in the Final Battle: additional starting locations to choose from, spies who will blow up the defender’s fortifications, and more.

The winner of the Final Battle takes control of that port and now that nation occupies its soil. Since ports generate the resources that used in the player-run economy, control of ports is of vital strategic importance to all nations. The only exception is Pirate ports, which can be Suppressed but not captured.

The real victory comes when one nation is declared the overall winner for that server. Every player on the winning side receives a reward, a head start is provided for the underdogs, and treaties are signed in Europe that restore ownership of the ports. Then the war begins anew!

Looks like playing all that Battlefield 2 is gonna come in handy too. Not to mention the other things I've been reading on the site.

Yeah....I'll be playing this game.

One of the things that I like about this game is that there is a lot of player support. Sony didn't buy out Flying Labs Software, Flying Labs negotiated a deal with Sony, so it's a bit different that some of the other Sony games. I know when I filled out a support ticket I had a response from someone within 24 hours. Also, you tend to find a lot of support for just general things in their forums. There's always an admin. somewhere to respond to a thread. I love that they have a section up to what players want to see in further expansions and patches.

http://www.burningseas.com/page/home

They still have a lot information on the site and they have devlogs. I'd look there if your really interested while I come up with a review.

I would like to try this -- I'm really reserved about droping 50 on it if I don't like it tho.

1. I take it there is PvP? (DAoC style)
2. Is there a demo that doesn't load the game with a bunch of "cool stuff you won't do the rwst of the game" (SWG)?

You have an option to turn on the pvp flag. I'm not sure if you can get pulled into a pvp fight at all unless you chose to turn on your flag. I'm sure the little miss knows more about it then I do.

So far the play style is a lot like ddo (except you have tuns of solo missions). You get all your missions from a harbor, any buildings you need to enter are zones (with either the shop or npc's with missions to give you). Most missions are accessed through the guy that gives you access to your boat. Either he sends you to specific quest instances, or to the open seas. The open seas is a zone.

On the ocean you control your ship and you fight as your ship. When you damage an opposing ship enough you can chose to grapple it, and you and your npc mates head over to the other ship for hand to hand combat.

The hand to hand combat isn't as neat as EQ that's for sure. Movement is a lot stiffer, no pretty pyrotechnics.

I can't tell you much about the economy yet. I guess it's pretty complicated. You buy most goods from other players through an auctioneer, but you can buy stuff outright.

I'll leave a more detailed review to Shoranu.

Here's the website for the Prima guide. There's a coupon for $10.00 off at best buy if anyone actually uses the game guides. (I'm off to go get it myself.) I'm mainly getting it for the information on the economy, since it is very complicated and completely player based (besides some of the starting stuff you can buy from vendors).

Thanks for posting that review clip on the Homepage Jabs. I saw the same review yesterday and was going to try to find it and post a link here so you saved me all the trouble. Applause Was kinda bummed to hear about the combat system and a few other points but I'm still willing to check the game out.

So I'm guessing the game is released being people are playing but I can't seem to find it in stores. Gonna see if I can find it today on lunch break or look for the D/L for it tonight. I'm guessing everyone is on the Bonny server?

We are a bit small to be involved in PvP. I know you can turn on your PvP flag by talking to a NPC, but I was reading Samantha's Prima Guide last night and it looks like there are also contested areas that can pull you into PvP with or without the flag on. So much to still figure out. You might want to check the forums too, as I haven't looked into this aspect yet.

Yep Cay, you can be pulled into PvP to fight in a war of nations when Unrest is high enough to have the battle. (See my post above for a little bit more detail).
People get pulled from a lottery so I would imagine you would have to have some setting turned on to be part of that lottery.

I don't know....I don't have the game.....yet. Anxious

Quick Review:
(keep in mind I'm only lvl 13 and have ONLY done the pirate faction.)

Graphics: Good. Not state of the art, but enough and it shouldn't kill your system. Water looks fabulous.

Quests

1. TONS of quests. Lots to keep you busy, most you can solo no problem.
2. Journal is lacking in informative information. Journal updates are not always apparent, and it isn't as user friendly as some of the other games like EQ II. For example, nothing ever says completed, and you can be talking to someone and not realize you have an update, or that they offer the next step.
3. Most quests solo or not, can be done in groups.

Combat

1. Sea Combat

Best part of the game. Just when you think you have things figured out and they are easy, you seem to face another kind of ship and have to learn how to really take it out well. For example, I got pretty good at just killing everyone off, boarding and taking over on most ships. However, I ran into a quest this morning that I had no choice but to board to complete the quest, but the ship was very maneuverable and I had a hard time knocking em out. I had to do a combination of taking out his sails and people before I could get it done.

Land Combat aka Swashbuckling

As the review said on the front, it is a bit lacking. Yet, it still seems to be kind of fun and I look forward to my new skills whenever I can learn em.

Crafting And Gathering Resources

I still haven't really crafted anything, but it seems pretty simple. Get recipe and resources and make.

Gathering resources is neat too. Each harbor can have a type of resource. For example, Iron, or a type of wood. You have to have a warehouse to store stuff in, and a building to be used as a labor camp. (warehouses can store your junk too). Every real time hour goes toward your production capability. So 1 day you would have 24 labor hours to work with and produce stuff like wood and mine iron. Stuff gets more complex than I'm going to explain here, like upkeep and taxes depending on who owns the port and what not, but that is the gist of it.

Banners and Sails

You can create your own sail design, upload it and have it approved and purchase it to be used on your boat's sails. Societies (Guilds) can have their own custom banners.

PvP i'm not going to go over cause I don't know anything about it other than it exists.

Also, like DAOC, once you've joined a faction and have characters in that faction on a server, you can only make alts in that faction. You can go to another server to make other faction characters, however.

Our Sever/Faction if you wanna play with thoes of us playing now:
Server: Bonie (sp)
Faction: Pirates

I plan on picking the game up or doing the digital download this weekend after I get paid

I just watched the video, 4 outta 5 stars, they are pretty rough on rating alot of games, so a 4 outta 5 is pretty good for them.

How good are the computers you all are playing on? I only have a pretty mediocre comp right now, (Dell XPS One) uses Radeon Mobility 2400, the graphics card is rated pretty high for "Mobile" graphics cards...so I dont know how nice it will be, I have my old DAoC comp im using as a Linux box with a GeForce 6800 and 512 RAM :P so wont be playing on that....

Also whats the monthly fee?

I LOVE LIL' BUNNIES THEY ARE FLUFFY!

Requirements are pretty low. XPS ONE should run it really well, i don't know the specs on the 2400 but as long as it has pixel shader 2.0 you're fine.
