The Developer's Blog of 2/25/10 mentions the ongoing development of solo epic questing, what it's called, and how it will probably be implemented, ie: you can now solo epic quests without being in a Fellowship if you wish.

Lots of changes to characters, quests, buffs, etc. and the introduction of being able to solo the Epic line of quests.
